WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2009--
Consumer electronics manufacturers leveraging the aftermarket services
of ModusLink PTS, a subsidiary of ModusLink Global Solutions™, Inc.
(NASDAQ: MLNK), can harvest and re-use working components and safely
dispose of environmentally hazardous materials from their products with
e-scrap, part of the Company’s Sustainable Solutions Suite. The e-scrap
service is an intrinsic part of ModusLink’s aftermarket services that
helps clients increase asset value recovery and lessen the environmental
impact of their electronic waste from consumer electronics like TVs and
cell phones. As part of this service offering, ModusLink’s Bloomington,
Indiana solution center has earned the ISO’s (International Organization
for Standardization) 14001 certification which verifies that ModusLink
meets the ISO’s Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Standards.
Damaged or discarded technology devices such as electronics, cell
phones, computers, etc., contain toxic substances that pose serious
risks when not recycled properly. Toxic and carcinogenic substances
commonly found in electronics include lead, mercury and polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) among others. The United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that unwanted electronics totaled two
and a half million tons in 2007. Furthermore, an estimated 70 percent of
heavy metals in U.S. landfills are the result of discarded electronics.
“Responsible manufacturing means properly recycling broken or unused
electronics,” said Joe King, vice president, aftermarket services for
ModusLink. “In addition, electronics that aren’t in use represent a
significant asset recovery opportunity since those parts can, for the
most part, be incorporated into new products. For instance, cell phones
are often tucked away in a desk drawer when most of the components of
the phone still hold manufacturing value.”
As part of its Aftermarket Suite of Solutions, ModusLink offers repair
services to clients and retailers. If a product is too damaged to be
repaired, ModusLink segregates the byproducts reusing the valuable
components and sending hazardous waste to an EPA-certified vendor to
ensure proper disposal.
King concluded, “Our clients turn to us for efficient value recovery
strategies that improve margins and positively impact customer
satisfaction. Our e-scrap service is just another example of how we help
our clients achieve those goals.”
ISO 14001 certification pertains to environmental management with the
intent to provide a framework for a holistic, strategic approach to the
organization's environmental policy, plans and actions.
